Coble 9'4"
This is the smallest
version of our highly successful Northumbrian Coble range of
cruising dinghies. She can sail with 2 crew or row/motor with 3
and has plenty of reserve buoyancy in her lines—she has the
same tumblehome, generous freeboard and deep forefoot with
flared bow sections as her larger sisters. Construction is
simple stitch and tape and uses just 4 sheets of 4, 5 or 6mm
plywood. A very pretty little craft for use as a tender, sail
trainer or for picnics.
LOA 9’4” (2.85m);
Beam 4’2” (1.26m); Approx. wht 62 lbs (28kg).

Stage 1 Kit: A$550.00

Coble 10'6"
The concept of the
Northumbrian 10'6" came from the need to have a sturdy and
very seaworthy small working dinghy which could be rowed, sailed
and motored easily and which would weigh no more than 70 lbs or
so. She also had to have a striking appearance and on looking
around at some of our traditional working craft, l revisited
drawings that l had done some while ago of Yorkshire Cobles
These Cobles were used for fishing and foying (tending shipping)
in the rugged conditions of the NE coast and North Sea. She
retains the generous freeboard and high stem of the Yorkshire
Cobles along with their shapely well raked transoms, tumblehome
and striking reverse sheer line.
This 10'6" x
4'3" version will have a simple lug rig with a centreboard

Stage 1 Kit: A$649.00

| Coble 12'6"
The 12'6" version uses a gunter
rig and has a beam of 4'11". She uses 6mm (1/4") ply -
around 5 sheets and has an approx. weight of 120 lbs. Her high
forward freeboard and veed forward sections means that she will
throw off water in rough seas. Like her smaller sister, she has
tumblehome in her topsides from amidships aft making her easy to
row whilst giving a generous waterline beam and stable sections.

Stage 1 Kit: A$934.00

| Coble 15'
At long last here is a
larger addition to our Northumbrian Coble range—at 15’ LOD,
she is a big handsome dayboat with space to accommodate the
family plus camping gear and stores. The drawings give details
for an outboard well and copious amounts of stowage. As with the
other Cobles, construction is stitch & tape but the moulds
and building jig details are also given along with the same
details for a 14’ version and a single masted gunter rig with
jib. She could be built as a motor coble (w/o the rig) and could
take a cuddy.
LOD 15’ (4.57m); Beam
5’10” (1.77m); Draft 7 1/2”/3’9 1/2” (0.19/1.15m);
Sail Area 140 sq.ft. (13.03 sq.m.); Approx. wht. 375 lbs (170
kg).

Stornaway 9'
The Stornoway 9 is the
first of a new class of dinghies which incorporate firm bilges
and moderately full transoms needed to carry loads safely and to
give good sailing qualities without dragging a large transom
through the water.
The plank shapes have been
computer generated for simple stitch and epoxy construction and
to make her eye sweet, she has 5 planks per side in addition to
a narrow hog plank which greatly simplifies construction. She
uses 3 sheets of 6mm ply for her hull and the sail rig can be
added later. The bow shape can be modified to suit but a
traditional stem shape is shown on the drawings.
LOD 9’1‘‘(2.77m);
Beam 4’2‘‘(1.26m); Draft 6’’/2’6‘‘(.16/.76m);
Sail Area 43 sq.ft(4 sq.m); Approx wht. 90 lb(41kg).

Stornaway 12'
Second in what will become a classic
range of craft is the Stornoway 12. She has 6 planks per side
giving her a lovely round hull. The standard drawings give the
plank shapes for stitch and epoxy construction but as with all
our designs, we can furnish the builder with mould shapes for
clinker/ ply or strip planked construction. The stitch and epoxy
method is definitely the quicker and easier method and will
produce a strong lightweight hull. We have given her a high
peaked gaff rig which keeps the spar lengths down and which will
not twist off at the head in the same way as the lower peaked
gaff rig.
She has plenty of internal
space with side benches and she can be built as either a rowing
or a rowing/sailing craft and would be ideal for family sailing.
She will take the sprit or alternative lug rigs of the
Highlander 12 and could be fitted out with a fore deck area.
LOA 12’1’’ (3.67m);
Beam 5’ (1.53m); Draft 6’’/3’3’’ (.16/1.0m); Sail
Area 78 sq.ft. (7.3 sq.m); Approx. wht. 135 lbs (61 kg).
Note - the plans now
include details for a gaff cutter rig with bowsprit

| Stornaway 14'
At last we have added a 14’ version
of our Stornoway design to our range of Dinghies & Dayboats—she
has been much requested and we have taken the opportunity to
base her construction on the highly successful Kingfisher design
with it’s continuous backbone set-up—consisting of a forward
girder, centreboard case and aft girder fastened to a narrow
bottom plank to form a rigid structure onto which the ply
frames/bulkheads and transom are set-up.
The ply planks (6 per
side) - the shapes for which are given on the drawings—are
then stitched into place and the seams finished with glass tape
and epoxy.
Mould shapes and
building jig details are also given for those who want to build
her using the clinker/ply method (these details can also be used
to strip plank the hull). We have drawn up a gunter rig as
standard so that the mast and spars fit within the hull for easy
towing—she could also take the gunter yawl rig with bowsprit
which is given as an alternative rig for the Kingfisher 14
design.
LOD 14’ (4.27m); Beam
5’9” (1.74m); Draft 8”/3’10” (0.2/1.17m); Sail Area
122 sq.ft. (11.36 sq.m.); Approx. wht. 290 lbs (132 kg).

| Stornaway 16'
The Stornoway 16 continues the lovely rounded lines
of the Stornoway family with their firm bilges flowing into an
attractive and not too deep transom, making them both excellent
sailors and easy rowers.
Like her smaller
sisters, she has a narrow bottom plank with a further 6 planks
per side — 5 or 6 planks per side seems to be a good
compromise between having enough planks to give a nicely rounded
hull shape and not over complicating the construction with too
many planks. Construction follows the same procedure as the
Kingfisher 14 and Stornoway 14 with a rigid backbone consisting
of forward and aft girders connected by the centreboard case.
Again, as with the Stornoway 14, we have included mould shapes
and building jig details for those who want to use the
clinker/ply method — the same details may be used for strip
planking too.
She has a sunken
foredeck and side benches as standard but she may be fitted out
in a number of ways (ie. with raised foredeck and side decks
etc). We have given her a gunter rig but she could take any of
the other 4 rigs given for the Highlander 16 (lug, sprit,
bermudan or yawl).
LOD 16’ (4.87m); Beam
6’ (1.81m); Draft 9”/4’ (0.23/1.2m); Sail Area 138 sq.ft.
(12.87 sq.m.); Approx. wht. 450 lbs (204 kg).
